Ten Tips to Tame Water Bills

Jul 21, 2000

1. Install ultra-low flush toilets (1.6 gallons per flush), or modify existing toilets to use less water by installing a toilet dam or plastic jug.
2. Install low-flow showerheads (less than 3 gallons per minute).
3. Reduce the level of water in baths.
4. Turn water off when brushing teeth or shaving.
5. Keep a jug of drinking water in the refrigerator.
6. Only wash full loads on the washing machine and dishwasher.
7. Xeriscape the yard (landscaping that conserves water). Plant native, drought-tolerant, or adapted plants in the yard.
8. Water the yard only in the morning, when evaporation rates are the lowest.
9. Water deeply and infrequently to promote good root growth and healthy plants.
10. Use a broom to clean sidewalks and driveways, not a water hose.
