The American Cancer Society is the leading cancer non-profit organization in the world. Our mission is to eliminate cancer as a major threat to our health through research, education and service therefore providing hope, progress and answers. Proudly, we have funded 30 Nobel Prize winners in many areas of cancer research, giving us the hope that one day we will find a cure. The ACS has made progress in the fight against cancer by educating the public about the lifestyles that can contribute to cancer, such as poor eating habits and smoking. Finally, we strive to provide answers to you and your loved ones through our National Call Center as well as many patient support programs.
The American Cancer Society offers many patient support programs free to the public. Some of them are described below:
Reach to Recovery is a one-on-one visitation program for women with breast cancer.
Man to Man is one-on-one visitation program for men with prostate cancer.
Camp Friendship is an overnight camp for children with cancer.
Kids Can Cope, Too! is a day camp for children who have family members who are battling cancer.
Look Good...Feel Better is a program designed to help women with cancer feel better about their appearance while undergoing treatments.
Road to Recovery is a transportation network available for cancer patients who need help getting to their treatments.
The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is the premier event of the ACS. Relay honors both cancer survivors and those who have died from cancer, and empowers the public to fight the battle through their own means and support the ACS's efforts in research, patient services, and educational programs. Relay provides Hope that one day we will win the war on cancer, and the survivors walking the opening lap are living proof that we are winning!
Relay for Life is an overnight event and will be held at Bowling Green City Park on May 12-13. The first lap is held for cancer survivors, followed by the opening ceremonies when teams of 8 to 15 people are introduced. Around this time, there will also be a huge chicken BBQ for the public and the participants. After dark, a luminary ceremony will be held to honor those we have lost to cancer and to celebrate those who have survived. Activities, music and entertainment go on all through the night and after sunrise, we will hold a closing ceremony to honor the efforts of the participants.
