Neighbors and community members came together to build a sandbag dike running north-south along the drainage ditch behind our development and along the river in our neighboring developments. Because the Weather Service raised the expected crest forecast several times, these dikes saw a return of sandbaggers many times! Sandbaggers worked in snow, mud, ice, water, and through a snowstorm.

After the code-red request for evacuation, some neighbors remained to patrol the neighborhood and dikes. These residents were able to bail out one home, prevent a second from taking on water, and coordinate efforts with neighboring areas. We set up a dike patrol, a shop to thaw pumps and hoses (in house 1's garage) and a Flood Center (in house 2's heated garage) for meetings, collection of gas money, food, and a place to rest/warm up, etc. These home owners even have a refrigerator on which we hung our meeting notes, patrol schedule, neighborhood resources and phone numbers! We worked closely with "Fireman Dan" who was assigned to our zone. A snow storm hit after a crest of 40.82 feet. Although the cold weather slowed up the river and melt, the "wet" snow the prediction for the 2nd crest.
Thanks neighbors for the use of your garages and equipment; the donation of money and food; and your outstanding efforts to protect our neighborhood. This truly is an extraordinary time witnessed and challenged by an extraordinary group of people.
In the words of Bob Larson - as we ended our daily flood briefing- "It is great being your neighbor."
