You can make a difference just by taking a few minutes and exchanging name, address and phone numbers with the 3 houses in front of you, three houses behind you and 1 on each side. If you say that you already know them so you don't need to. When was the last time you spoke with all of them and do they really know you would appreciate a phone call for anything suspicious. I'm sure they would appreciate the same.

The minute you ASSUME its taken care of so you don't need to. I'm sure your opinion will change when your robbed!
