Beginning in July, in order to gather as broad a range of community involvement as possible, the New Cut/Taylor Corridor review process employed a two-pronged approach: a community a Listening Session and a Charrette. The purpose of the Listening Session was to give citizens an opportunity to have their ideas for the city heard by others in an open format. Over 50 South Louisville residents citizens attended the listening session.
On Sept. 10, a Charrette was conducted at Lynnhurst United Methodist Church in which 35 residents came to share suggestions and recommendations. The Charrette is a technique used to involve members of the public more directly in exploring local and regional land use planning issues. Residents are, in effect, put in the driver's seat and challenged to devise visions for enhancing and protecting the Corridor’s economic, environmental, and social wellbeing.
Through this session residents benefited from an increased understanding of the land use and development issues facing our area. During the New Cut/Taylor Blvd Charrette, the 35 residents along with City Solutions Center staff were divided into six small groups.. Each team was given a map of a segment of the Corridor the community, The team members were challenged to juggle the competing demands of various viewpoints in order to create a vision of the neighborhood that is a reflection of the resident’s core values.
The teams were then given approximately one and one-half hours to work to create a desired outcome. Once that time limit expired, one team member was asked to present each team's work. The New Cities Institute then began a process of sifting through all the comments gathered at the Listening Session and the Charrette. The purpose of this effort was to find the common themes that could be woven together with a set of recommendations to be used to guide the Corridor recommendations.
The next step will be a draft report for review by a Task Force appointed by Mayor Fischer. The review is tentatively scheduled for early November. The New Cut/Taylor Corridor project has been made possible by funding support from the following members of the Metro Council: Vicki Welch, D-13, Marianne Butler, D-15, Dan Johnson, D-21 and David Yates D -25.
