Terr ce on Palatka recently.

Stephen Cotten reported that he is a member of the Mayor’s Tree Board. This body is looking at the
entire metro area, with regard to canopy coverage (27% here). The ice storm was
responsible for much of the tree loss in our area.

He introduced two ladies with tree expertise, Monica from Cherokee Triangle and
Sherree. They discussed the Emerald Ash Boar, which is damaging every ash tree
here. It is estimated that in 2 to 3 years, the damage will be devastating.
Descriptions of how to recognize the ash tree were shown, bark resembles an
alligator with multiple leaves on clusters. Stephen distributed brochures about
the ash tree problem.

Fire Department, 3rd District – Three representatives were present (Craig
Willman, Officer Renfro, and Dennis Wade). They discussed fire safety and
summer time. Discarding cigarettes is a major cause of fires. Gas grills and
the importance of moving them away from houses and garages was emphasized. It
is against the law to burn outdoors. Fire hydrants and fireworks were
discussed. There was a question about which governmental agency governs
fireworks. Fortunately, there have been no major fireworks problems, although
some members have expressed concern.

Police Department
Todd Hale had nothing major to report. Reminded everyone to close garage doors
and lock them, as well as locking cars. Speeding school buses going through the
subdivision was an issue with members. It was suggested to call the school and
also the bus compound with the bus number. He suggested letting the police know
when you are going on vacation so patrols can be aware in case of unlawful
activity on personal property.
