How to Make a Difference in a Neighborhood

When you bought your home or moved into a rental unit, you also invested in the neighborhood around you. Research shows that neighborhoods and communities are stronger and safer when residents get involved and work together. Neighborhood involvement raises property values, too. Here are a few suggestions to make a difference in your neighborhood.

Step 1
Introduce yourself to your neighbors. Getting to know your neighbors can make the difference between merely occupying an address and living in a neighborhood of friends.

Step 2
Start a community crime watch group, or join one if it already exists. Establish an ongoing communication network to discuss ways to work together for the improvement of the neighborhood.

Step 3
Get involved in your neighborhood association, if you have one. Organizing a neighborhood brings neighbors together to form a collective, united voice. An organized group of individuals can be a powerful and influential force.

Step 4
Start a neighborhood newsletter. Include a calendar detailing special events in your neighborhood and in the larger community. Post articles and ideas gathered from friends and neighbors, such as favorite recipes or gardening and home-maintenance tips.

Step 5
Plan neighborhood get-togethers or block parties to increase the sense of belonging to your neighborhood.

Tips & Warnings
Seize opportunities as they arise.

Don't say "next time" or "tomorrow."
Have a "do it now" attitude.Approach your neighbor and start a casual conversation. A few minutes of time can begin a new relationship.Include local government, law enforcement, and human services leaders in your neighborhood activities and communications. Get to know your community police officers and government representatives personally.

They're important members of your neighborhood.
