The fireworks industry is pushing an amendment to a bill(SB 1372)that will establish a "task force" to review and make recommendations to the legislators that could possibly open State Statute 791 to even greater abuse by the fireworks industry. This is bad news for our efforts to rid our neighborhoods of fireworks.
The bill freezes any additional city or county action that would require all purchasers of fireworks to prove they are truly eligible to buy fireworks. The freeze is in effect until the "task force" presents it report in 2008.
This is a blatant attempt by the fireworks industry to place more loopholes in State Statute 791 and to limit local governmental entities action to comply with the desires of the majority of their citizens.
The fireworks industry contributes thousands to individual legislators and their political parties, therefore, we don't anticipate anything positive (except for the fireworks industry) from this task force. If they are successful we should all remember this during the next election.
