Bayou Highlands Neighborhood Association

Get to Know Your Board

Feb 03, 2003

The new fiscal year begins?…but with familiar faces. As many of you know, the officers of the board ran unopposed this term and will be guiding the Association through another exciting year. Although some residents are familiar with these officers, many are not?…so it seemed only appropriate to introduce these hard working volunteers at the start of their new terms.

Mary Darling will be serving her second term as President of the Board. Originally from Michigan, she arrived in St. Petersburg at the request of her only daughter, now 29. Ms. Darling volunteers for the police department and enjoys working with people. A pediatric nurse, she has lived in Bayou Highlands for two years and spends her leisure time gardening and swimming.

Gary Collins, a St. Petersburg native and graduate of Lakewood High, is the Association?’s Vice President entering his second term. An avid gardener, he and his wife Angela have resided in the neighborhood eight years and have two daughters in college.

Secretary, Donna Porterfield and her husband have lived in the neighborhood for 19 years with their son and daughter, both now in high school. She is employed by the Pinellas County School Board and is serving her second year as Secretary.

John ?“Jack?” Barnhart, is in his second year as Treasurer. Married, father of three and grandfather of five with a sixth on the way, Jack spends much of his week promoting Continuing Education, Inc., a company providing continuing education cruise conferences to the medical field and other professionals. He and his growing family all reside in St. Petersburg.

Always looking forward, the Board set some very specific goals and worked diligently all year to get the Association up and running. In 2002, the Board (1) established the Association as a corporation, (2) held two neighborhood clean ups, (3) purchased meeting announcement signs, (4) coordinated a free city trash pick up, (5) became a member of CONA, (6) started a monthly neighborhood newsletter, (7) established a website, and (8) was awarded a grant of $1,142.00 from the Police Forfeitures Fund.
