. . . .Under the Jacksonville Journey anti-crime plan, six closed community centers were to be repaired and reopened using $100,000 in city money. The day-to-day operation would be bid out to area nonprofit agencies, who tailor the programming - whether after-school programs, dance groups, GED classes or anything else - to the local community. . . . .
By the end of the meeting, it was decided: The center, Ft. Caroline Club, was off the Journey plans and would stay closed, save for the pool in the summer.
Meanwhile, a new request for bids will be prepared for the other five community centers
(which includes Beachwood). The city will continue with other activities - such after-school programs and youth sports. . . .
Roslyn Mixon-Phillips, the city's director of Recreation and Community Services, said the Journey has a variety of different youth activities. She doesn't see the Fort Caroline conflict as a major setback.
Of six closed community centers, five will be reopened. Jacksonville Journey funds will go to renovate and reopen five closed centers and bid them out for nonprofit agencies to run.
