Metro Councilman Jon Akerson is working on getting sidewalks put in on the Bellemeade side of Shelbyville Road.

It is a difficult and dangerous path to walk anytime of the day or night and even worse if it has been raining. It is expensive but public safety is involved.

What are your thoughts.

On the surface, this appears to be an excellent idea.  I have had the experience of almost hitting walkers and bike riders in that stretch from the Moorgate entrance to Whipps Mill Road in the dark of the early morning hours.  Shelbyville Road gets quite congested during the so-called commute hours and it appears that 99.9% of the drivers ignore the speed limit and safety 'cause they're too busy sipping coffee and/or texting or both as they rush to get to work on time after they left home too late..

But, that brings up a question about the many bike riders along that stretch.  Where would they ride if footage is taken for sidewalks?

Next question:  who would maintain the sidewalks after they are built?

Would the sidewalk be built higher than the level of the street?

Would street lights be installed?

An engineer study is to be done to answer some of those questions.

Good questions John

Agree that it is an excellent idea and with the caveats.  Will wait and see on this issue.  I was hoping for an answer on sidewalks on Whipps Mill from Whittington Pkwy to N. Chadwick.  I was watching the Metro council on TV and they seemed to be talking about this issue along with a hundred others in council-speak, so could not gain any knowledge.  Do you know anything about this?  Thanks.
