Councilman Dee Andrews Announces the theme for the 20th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Peace and Unity Parade Celebration:
Where Do We Go From Here?¦Chaos or Community???
The City of Long Beach and Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews is pleased to announce that the 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace and Unity Parade Celebration that will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2008 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the City of Long Beach. This year's theme is Where Do We Go From Here?¦Chaos or Community??, taken from the title of Dr. King's last published book.
In selecting this year's event theme, I wanted to make certain that Dr. King's teaching continues through-out the celebration and for future generations. We need to lift the consciousness of our community to remind them of the principles of Dr. King. It is not just a day of celebration and music. It is a day where all of us can reflect on the accomplishments of the past and recognize the need to continue his work.?? said Andrews. I realize that our community is in need of love, both self love and brotherly love. Who better than Martin Luther King, Jr., to help inspire us beyond violence and chaos, to this love???
Where Do We Go From Here?¦Chaos or Community??, Dr. King's last publication, takes the reader beyond the dream, to making the dream a reality. Few people have heard of Reverend Dr. King's last book. As Dr. King quotes in his book, Power, properly understood, is the ability to achieve purpose??. Our purpose with this years' event is to bring harmony back to the community and bring people together to lift the consciousness of the community,?? said Councilman Andrews.
Saturday morning, January 19th, the parade will begin on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue intersecting Anaheim Street, and is followed by a multicultural celebration at King Park located at 1950 Lemon Avenue. The celebration will be filled with music and dance performances; a children's play area, that is filled with free games and give-a-ways. There will be lots of food, general merchandise vending booths, and nonprofit community services information. This year we have added a Health Pavilion that will have a number of free health test and medical care information for all ages.
Last year, the celebration attracted over 10,000 people participating in the parade and visiting the park. This year, the week long celebration will attract cultures from all over Long Beach to continue the legacy and teachings of a great leader, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
