Plant hedges around the area where your garbage cans are, leaving an opening for easy access. Hedges effectively hide the cans from view and create a pleasant shield of greenery. Flowering or fragrant shrubs also work to disguise any smells that may emanate from your refuse.
Install a privacy fence. Look for privacy fencing that is slightly higher than your garbage cans. Build a small alcove at the corner of your house or next to your garden shed, where you can place the cans out of sight. Vinyl and wood varieties are typically easy to locate at your local home-improvement store.
Plant ornamental grass around the area where the garbage cans sit. Ornamental grasses typically grow quickly and thickly, creating a shield to camouflage your unsightly trash containers and hide them from view. Flowering grasses add a splash of color to your yard as well.
Purchase or build a wooden storage bin for your garbage cans. Such enclosures usually have a lid that lifts up to allow you to easily deposit garbage into the cans, and doors in the front that open, so you can quickly pull your cans out to transfer them to the curb. Versions are available with a top shelf, as well, for placing recycling bins out of site.
Install a trellis around your garbage-can area and plant a climbing vine or ivy at the base. As the greenery grows, it will further shield your garbage cans from view. Flowering vines are an option too, as long as you don't mind the possibility of bumblebees.
