The tragic events of September 11, 2001, have left a scar on the nation. The city of Long Beach has several committees looking out for the safety of our citizens and visitors.

The City has a Public Safety Team composed of Long Beach police, fire, airport, harbor, public works, planning and building, and disaster management personnel. Members of the team have participated in training sessions and are prepared to ensure the security of our city. The morning of September 11, 2001, our public safety team reacted immediately and City Hall remained open to respond to the needs of our residents.

The City is also a member of the Long Beach Disaster Committee. Organized by the Fire Department, the Disaster Committee meets monthly to discuss emergency planning and conducts simulated emergency exercises. The Committee is comprised of over 100 members including representatives from the City of Long Beach, local hospitals, L.B. Unified School District, the Red Cross, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

In addition, the City also works with the County of Los Angeles organizing emergency activities within the county. Long Beach participates in the county's annual Operational Area Exercise, which includes Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS). SEMS is designed to improve the coordination of emergency response and expedite recovery efforts. This year's exercise will focus on bioterrorism.

What can you do to be prepared?
1. Participate in Community Emergency Response Training

2. Take a course in first aid
3. Purchase a battery-operated radio
4. Purchase several large flashlights
5. Keep fresh batteries available
6. Know the phone number of your child's school
7. Know your company's emergency guidelines
8. Discuss emergency plans with your family
9. Get to know your neighbors and join community organizations
