HOW TO GUARD YOUR IDENTITY

*Don't offer personal data on the phone,through the mail or online unless you're initiated contact or you're sure you're dealing with legitimate party.
*Tear up your junk mail or us a shredder . Put your out going mail in a post office box instead of an unsecured mailbox.
*Learn about your options when you fill out an application or disclose personal information. Ask whether it will be shared or sold. Also ask whether you can choose to keep it secret.
*Only give out your Social Security or license number when absolutely necessary.

IF YOUR IDENTITY HAS BEEN STOLEN

*Contact the fraud department of any of the 3 major credit bureaus and ask them to place a fraud alert on your file.
*Close accounts you believe have been compromised.
*File a police report,since some creditors may require it as proof.
*File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission
