''Yes school is open''

Posted in: Braintree
June 30th has to be the last day

The reason that school cannot extend beyond June 30th, is a combination of BEA contract issues, and the fact that the fiscal year ends on June 30th. July 1st is the beginning of the new fiscal year, FY06.
I'm not sure about the idea of extending the school day, something tells me that its the number of days, not minutes or hours that the state dictates. Maybe someone else would know.

I Don't Think

the school year can be extended beyond June 30 unless the teacher's union agrees to it. This being a wild guess by me, I doubt the union would agree to to anything like that. Any other changes that would be proposed would have to be negotiated. Good luck with Mr. Kramer the union president. He's such an agreeable fellow.
Contract drives June 30 date

You are correct. The teachers / union contract states they can not work past June 30. The union would also have to vote if they decided to extend hours of time and learning. The Department of Education determines the 180 days and how many hours of time and learning the kids need by law. Its the union that dictates the timetable as to when the last day they will work before their summer break. A few years ago this dilemna happened with snow days and the union fought to not give up any holidays (i.e., Good Friday) or spring break days....And they say its all about the kids .....
