Selectmen

Why not, THO?

I am not suggesting that we raise taxes to provide more services but it has been well documented what the schools have done to the budgets over the past years and it is about time that someone fights back.

I agree that we should be able to live within our budget amount and that would mean no raises for anyone this year. I believe that schools are giving a 1% increase this year. As elected leaders, doesn't the school committee have a responsibility to the entire town?
As I sit in the peanut gallery, I will consider a responsible budget that addresses the needs of our community and treats them all fairly.

As far as one group NOT being more important than another? From my view, I have never seen the schools consider anyone other than themselves when it comes budget time and I think the Selectmen are doing the right thing to raise awareness to the public safety issues that the town is experiencing.

You have documented the runaway budget increases that the schools have received over the years which is a direct result of people pushing their weight around at FinCom and Town Meetings.

your point has merit

but now is the time for total fiscal responsibility.two wrong don't make a right.it is not time to feed ANY department.i am not defending school department at all.police and fire get detail and training, quinn, etc.i disagree about the selectmen.they have not shown EITHER backbone OR restraint.
they also know now that most likely its
one term and out.they may be inclined
to posture for special interests figuring at least their family & friends will be well taken care of.you know what would really take guts?
putting the TOWN first in spite of this.this way any integrity each of this group actually has will FINALLY
shine through.they could actually STAND
for ethics and ideals instead of them and theirs, you know?

Tho, the reality is

that it is going to take a long time to break down the fiefdoms that we have within our town and the thought of having every department share the load is gone with the actions of the school committee. And I don't think that political posturing by members of the BOS will take a back seat to anything. It is how they got elected.

Last year progress seemed to have been made in sharing the budget reductions across all departments and we were asked for a capital debt exclusion. I don't mind being asked and I thought that all departments were represented in this question. I don't know what happened this year but it is different.
