Nov 03, 2002

BRENTWOOD-DARLINGTON NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION

October 3, 2002 Meeting, 7pm

Attending: Ron Sumner, Mary LK Davis, Joanne Bart, Ken Mc McCormick, David Orange-Gustafson, Martha Richards, Gail Kiely, Dick Hazeltine, Sally Lucero, Denise Salmon, Mary Miller, Les Ryther Jr., Craig Beals, Todd Teats, Malcolm Hancock, Kay Toran, Volunteers of America.

September minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer?’s report was presented and approved.

Kay Toran, Volunteers of America, spoke about the Children?’s Initiative, sponsored by City Comm. Dan Saltzman, which will be on the November ballot. This would raise property taxes by about 3% and would provide about $10million to fund existing, under funded programs that are successful and deal with early childhood, abuse prevention, and keeping kids in school. Discussion followed and concern was expressed about whether B-D?’s programs would receive any of the funding. (See flyer) We were encouraged to write or email Comm. Saltzman?’s office with our concerns.

Officer Teats spoke about crime statistics for August. We also discussed a problem house in Ken McCormick?’s neighborhood. Officer Teats asked for input regarding the WelSpring mental health home on 72nd. The BDNA Land Use Committee plans to visit that facility when it opens. The police see no reason to deny permits. Location of sex offenders was brought up and Officer Teats said he?’d try to find out what information he could share with the community.

Martha Richards, Land Use: January 16 from 7 to 8:30pm will be a general land use meeting explaining policies, the vision, and neighborhood plan. All are encouraged to attend. The City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development is interested in talking about Green Thumb. Monday, October 7 is a hearing for WelSpring downtown, 9:30pm in the planning Office. Discussion followed about street improvement process and Local Improvement District Meeting.

Gail reported that the newsletter is done and is at the printer.

Mary LK Davis reported that the dinner-Auction is happening on October 12th and reminded people to buy their tickets. It will be a Chinese theme and much fun is anticipated.

David Orange-Gustafson reported on SE Uplift. He did surveys at the Hawthorne Street Fair. He reminded us of the candidate debate at Central Catholic. (See flyer) October 22, 7-8pm.

Craig passed around the sign up sheet for greeters, who are needed for Dec, May, and June meetings.

Open Forum: Ken McCormick of SE 74th shared about the excessive TriMET lift bus traffic on his street, including backing up, speeding, rude drivers, and his inability to get TriMET to be more responsive to safety issues generated by the number of buses serving a facility housing developmentally disabled residents. Sally will work with Ken to find solutions to the traffic problem generated by buses carrying only one passenger at a time

Dick Hazeltine: Haven?’t made any more progress at the moment on the recognition awards. Community Court is still recruiting more citizen involvement. Beginning in January, Judge Baldwin will be the presiding judge. There is a Community Court Meeting at BDCC 5:30pm next Wednesday.

Ron made several announcements.

Sally Lucero, Crime Issues: She is interested in building up the Neighborhood Watch. We will consider a Crime Watch general meeting in April.

Denise reminded us that she is creating an archive. If you know where something is that belongs to BDNA, call her and let her know!

Johnson Creek Watershed issues were discussed. Perhaps we can include them in a field trip or as an exhibit at the spring clean-up.

The Fall Retreat was discussed. (See handout for summary of retreat)

Marty Mills resigned from BDNA board. And Susan Cox, a former board member is moving to Texas

Meeting adjourned at 8:45pm. Next meeting is November 7th at 7pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Joanne Barta
