We received a fact-filled presentation on mosquitoes from Bruce Prior, Tucson Water hydrologist and mosquito control specialist. He described different species of mosquitoes and the risk of mosquito-borne disease. (Arizona and three other states are still free of West Nile Fever). He also reminded us how important it is to empty standing water from wherever it may collect so that mosquitoes do not propagate.
Chris Avery showed his new "cow," a propane-powered mosquito trap that includes an attractant based on the special smell that ruminants give off. He will give an update on his "cow's" effectiveness as the mosquito season progresses.
Sarajean Harwood, Branch Manager at the Himmel Library (on Treat and First Street) gave a great orientation about the summer youth reading programs offered by the Library. She was ably assisted by our own Suzie Husband, who is the young adult librarian at the Main Library downtown.
Herb Wagner reported on the successful Household Hazardous Waste drop-off program held on May 10 in our neighborhood.
