PRESIDENTS REPORT:

The garage sale is fast approaching. We need volunteers. My wife and I will be walking around the neighborhood collecting fees for participation. There are no independent funds to support the garage sale. Please be gracious.

I had a very gratifying experience regarding response to damage to Association property. Someone drove over our property at the Lakebrook entrance to Brookside Woods. A conscientious neighbor followed the vehicle and got a license number. I called the police at 645-4545. The person I talked to was very responsive. Subsequently, Officer Owens met me and took a report. He was very professional. We discussed issues of crime and vandalism in our neighborhood. He said CALL THE POLICE. Call if you see kids drinking. Call if you see suspicious kids. Call if you see anything suspicious. A call provides a reason for police to check the situation out. Again the phone number is 645-4545. Pursuit of small crime tends to prevent more serious crime. As this newsletter is being prepared to go out I have been notified about vandalism on Fernleaf.

Regarding Don Scott airport expansion, there has been much in the news. WOOSE, the group opposed to airport expansion needs all the support it can get from those against airport expansion. Their web site has previously been published.

Please see the note regarding street curb replacement. If you call the city now it may take years for the curb to be replaced. Some curbs are beginning to look very shabby.

STREET CURB NEED REPLACED?

The City of Columbus has the responsibility to maintain the street curbs on city streets. As our streets age, these curbs tend to crumble. Some neighbors have asked the BWCA to look into this subject and request they be repaired.

Each homeowner who thinks their curbs are in need of repair needs to make a request directly to the City of Columbus, Public Service Department, Transportation Division. Call Bonnie Taylor at 645-7497 or email her at bltaylor@columbus.gov. Provide Bonnie with your name, address, phone number and state that you have ?“deteriorating curbs?”. They will assign a city representative to inspect your curbs, and if they agree, you are placed on the waiting list. I understand it may take a few years until your property is at the top of the list.

NEIGHBORHOOD DIRECTORY IS OUT:

The new BWCA Neighborhood Directory is out and you should receive it with this Woods?’ Lore. You will find the directory provides some information about your Civic Association, has a section listing young people interested in providing Baby Sitting, Pet Sitting, Lawn Mowing and Snow Shoveling services. Neighbors are listed alphabetically and by street locations.

New this year is our Advertising Section at the back of our directory. Our efforts to defray the publishing costs for this year?’s directory by accepting advertisements was a success. Please consider utilizing these advertisers services.

PARKS REPORT:

It may not look like spring outside but very soon the new redbud and crabapple trees will be blooming in the Maplebrook Civic Park. Plans are underway for additional plantings in the various parks and entrances to Brookside Woods.

We hope to try something new this year for maintenance of our public areas. It was suggested that we compose a list of routine things that need to be done and ask each of you to commit to assuming responsibility for one item on the list. You could spend a few minutes whenever you liked to do the job and with everyone?’s help, the burden would not be too great for any one person.
Please review the list below and contact me, Sue Downey, at sdowney@columbus.rr.com or 766-5421 if you would like to be responsible for one of the items listed below. Please indicate which area you would assume responsibility for, e.g., NE Lakebrook entrance, Thistlewood entrance, Maplebrook entrance, or Maplebrook Civic Park.

1. General clean up flowerbeds for spring
2. Weed flowerbeds as needed
3. Deadhead/trim back flowers as needed
4. Plant annuals in mid-May
5. Rake leaves in fall
6. Mulch, if needed (we would deliver a truckload and schedule volunteers for this one)
7. Cut back perennials in fall and cleanup the flowerbeds
8. Plant bulbs in fall
9. Pick up trash, as needed (especially along Snouffer and 161)

If anyone has perennials from their own yards that they will be dividing and or eliminating this year, let me know and we might be able to use them in our public areas.

TREASURER'S REPORT:

To the 134 families who have not paid your dues yet, please fill out the form below and mail your check soon. If you have any questions about your civic association, please feel free to contact me at 889-2891, or any of the BWCA Board members (names and phone numbers available on the front of this news letter). GARAGE SALE INFORMATION: from Arthur Pellegrini

The garage sale is fast approaching, Saturday, April 17. The Worthington Special Olympics uses my home as a fundraiser with parents and friends of WSO donating sellable items. If there are members of the Brookside Woods community who don?’t wish to participate in the garage sale and have sellable items they would otherwise discard, these items can be donated to WSO for the garage sale. Please contact my wife, Catherine Pellegrini (761-8547), to donate items. Donations are tax deductible (with the usual recommendation that tax deductions should be discussed with your accountant).

2004 ?– Garage Sale:

Preparations are underway for the Brookside Woods Garage Sale. Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 17th, from 9 am to 2 PM.

We have again elected to not sponsor the Friday night ?“pre-sale?” event for the neighborhood. Too many outsiders create dangerous conditions with no traffic controls in place. Please help keep the neighborhood safe by waiting until Saturday.

A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS flier is attached to this newsletter. To make this event successful, we need as many people as possible to donate an hour or two of their time. We provide a safe environment by using cones & barrels, directional signage, and maps of the one-way street patterns. Traffic directors are critical to keeping things flowing and assisting our customers.

Due to the congestion on Saturday, we urge all residents to avoid scheduling deliveries, lawn service, and other events hampered by the limited access. This is a small price to pay to avoid garage sales throughout the year, which would bring outsiders in to our neighborhood on a regular basis.

All costs for this event are covered through sponsorship and nominal fees paid by all participants ($6 BWCA members, $12 non-members), which are collected on the day of the event. Volunteers keep our costs at a minimum, and will be scheduled for specific time slots. A safety meeting/social hour will be held Friday evening (April 16th) at John and Vicky Hart?’s house, with refreshments provided. It?’s a great way to meet some new neighbors.

If you are interested in volunteering, or have any questions regarding the garage sale, please contact John Hart at 792-8657.

We look forward to sunny weather, a safe day and strong sales.

NOTE: This is the only Woods?’ Lore issue that will address the Garage Sale. Mark your calendars.

2004 ?– GARAGE SALE

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!
Saturday, April 17, 2004

Volunteers are needed to help keep the annual garage sale a safe and enjoyable event. Six intersections need traffic directors for 1 1/2 hour shifts from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It?’s easy. It?’s fun. But most importantly, it provides a valuable service in keeping our children and others safe during this busy time. We can also use volunteers for initial set up and clean up of traffic cones and barrels, before and after garage sale hours on that day.

Join volunteers on Friday April 16th, at 7:00 p.m. for a short planning meeting at John & Vicky Hart?’s home located at 2217 Cloverdale Court, refreshments provided.

REMINDER TO ALL: Once again, due to the overwhelming concern for safety and security in our neighborhood, there will be no ?“Pre-Sale?” on Friday night. With no traffic controls in place, traffic jams and accidents create unnecessary risks. Please consider the safety of your neighbors and do not open up your garage Friday night. Thank you.

To volunteer on Saturday, complete the form below and drop it off to John Hart, 2217 Cloverdale Court or call John at 792-8657, by April 3rd.
