NEXT BOARD MEETING March 8, 2004 at 7:30 pm Barb Boyd?’s Home(7085 Lakebrook Blvd.)All neighbors welcome!!

PRESIDENT'S REPORT:

The Brookside Woods Civic Association met Monday, January 5, 2004. Community updates, issues, and activities were discussed. Regarding updates, the Columbus Transportation Division painted yellow and white lines directing traffic at the entrance of SR161. The BWCA Board thinks this will facilitate traffic turning right and left onto SR161, and traffic entering the Brookside Woods neighborhood from SR161.

Michelle Shinew is working with the appropriate authorities to get the speed limit on SR161 reduced. The Board strongly endorses her efforts.

Clyde Welch, a member of our community donated time, talent, and material to the construction of a structure that provides shielding and marked glare reduction of the light on the flag in our Maplebrook Civic Park at the corner of Oakfair Avenue and Maplebrook Lane. The problem of glare seems solved. Clyde is an excellent handyman. My family has used him frequently.

The Board talked at length about the use of Brookside Woods Civic Association website, in particular, the ?“Meet-Your-Neighbor?” feature. We encourage neighbors to post a short personal or family sketch on the ?“Meet Your Neighbor?” area. It is easy to do! Go to the BWCA web site: www.neighborhoodlink.com; type in our zip code 43235; click on Brookside Woods Civic Association (note: don?’t click on Brookside Civic Association); select the ?“Meet Your Neighbors?” heading; then click on ?“Create, Edit, or Hotlink your homepage?” and follow subsequent screen prompts. The use of the BWCA Website is potentially a very effective way to communicate, increase community interaction and meet people with similar interests.

The Board discussed the greater use of e-mail to distribute the Woods?’ Lore, provide community alerts, and other appropriate material. We request those who are willing to receive limited e-mail to please send an email to Denise Badgley at dbadgley@columbus.rr.com.

The next meeting of WOOSE (a Worthington group opposed to the expansion of the OSU Don Scott Airport) is January 22, 2004, 7-9PM at the Worthington Northwest Library. Two websites that discuss issues regarding airport expansion are www.woose.org and www.osuairport.org.

I have not seen or heard of any community crime. We still need a block watch captain. In the interim, please contact me regarding any crime related issues. My phone number is 761-8547.

SPECIAL TRAFFIC REPORT:

On Thursday, January 8, the Columbus Transportation and Pedestrian Commission met to review action needed on speed limit requests. After over two years of study and delays, the commission was presented with a proposal to reduce the speed limit from 50 mph, which is posted right at our neighborhood entrance, to 45 mph, which is the lowest level of speed limit available without further reason for exception. Studies had been conducted which concluded that 85% of the traffic moves through the area at 46 mph which indicates that motorists will comply with this new, slower speed.

We are hoping that just the removal of the sign at our entrance will prevent passing motorists from stepping on the gas as we try to enter the highway. The other 50 mph sign for motorists traveling east, which causes drivers approaching our entrance to reach 50 mph or more will also be removed. It should be noted that this action by the City actually lags the State approval of this new, safer rate. In the words of one of the honorable commissioners to the Transportation Division, "What took you so long?"

Michelle Shinew
2192 Fernleaf Lane

NEIGHBORLY NEIGHBOR

Thank you to Gordon Rae, who asked the BWCA Board to look for ways to improve our southern exit from Maplebrook Lane onto SR161. Gordon was frustrated with cars waiting to turn left, which were blocking those trying to turn right onto SR161. We contacted the Columbus Transportation Division and after studying the situation, they agreed to paint turn lanes on Maplebrook Lane. This is a great improvement, thanks Gordon!

FAR NORTHWEST COALITION REPORT:

Planes, Trains and Automobiles Development

They should call the proposed development Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The area across the street from the book store on SR161, next to Tansky Auto body Repair, is currently zoned for office and retail use. The current owners are asking the city to change the zoning to accommodate their plan of a small village, which would include:
* 80 Single family homes
* Apartment Complex (310 Units)
* Multi-story parking structures (2)
* 52,000 sq ft shopping center

Future residents would literally back up to the proposed new OSU Don Scott Airport north runway. They would be a 3 wood away from the railroad tracks, and the future 5-lane highway of SR161 complete with a retaining wall. I can?’t imagine much peace and quiet in that environment.
Far Northwest Coalition.

The impact on our neighborhood would be the traffic problems caused by a single point of entrance and exit for the entire proposed community. If the project would wait for the City to widen SR161 (still estimated at 5 ?– 10 years away), there would be less of an issue, but they are not willing to wait. We are all painfully aware of the back-ups that occur at Linworth on SR161, they will only get worse.

The proposed rezoning met with much resistance from the Northwest Civic Association (Brookside Woods Civic Association is part of the Far Northwest Coalition) but it is ultimately up to the Columbus Zoning Board to decide the fate of the project.
Scott Fair, Vice President BWCA

GARAGE SALE INFORMATION: from Arthur Pellegrini

The garage sale is fast approaching, Saturday, April 17. The Worthington Special Olympics uses my home as a fund raiser with parents and friends of WSO donating sellable items. If there are members of the Brookside Woods community who don?’t wish to participate in the garage sale and have sellable items they would otherwise discard, these items can be donated to WSO for the garage sale. Please contact my wife, Catherine Pellegrini (761-8547), to donate items. Donations are tax deductible (with the usual recommendation that tax deductions should be discussed with your accountant).
