I do not want to start any controversy, but am really confused. If any one on the council or city government wants to educate me about this by e-mail outside the board, please let me know how to contact you and delete this posting...

I am a relatively new resident of the city and I am totally confused about the function of our Woodlawn Park Police. Do we just have the one officer who is part-time? If so, does Louisville or St. Matthews provide service during the hours he is not on duty? Is he actually a law enforcement officer or simply a city code enforcement officer?

I really don't care what hours he works as long as we have some form of police presence in the other hours of the day. Alternatively, if he is just a code enforcement officer, how can we be assured that we are actively being protected by law enforcement?

The City of Woodlawn Park has two part-time police officers that are scheduled to work approximately 120 hours a month.  Our Chief of Police. Jim Carter, is a retired St. Matthews police officer, and Bob Heaton is a retired Jefferson County police officer.  Both of these men also are Code Enforcement Officers for our city.  This means that they also enforce the laws of our city and write warnings and/or citations for violations that they observe.  They are also certified Law Enforcement Officers that enforce State and Local Laws and they do have the power to arrest Felons and Misdemeanors that occur in their presence.

If a crime does occur our residents should call Louisville Metro. Police to make a report.  After doing this the victim should notify our Chief of Police the type of crime and when it occured.

As you can tell by some of the writings on this webpage a lot of residents do not call our police department about problems in our city, such as the last one about the child on a mini-bike, but will complain about a problem on this website without notifying our police officers.

I try to check this website daily and if I see a complaint I will call our Chief of Police and advise him of the problem and ask him to address it.  I have found that when there is a problem and I call the Chief, He or I never receive a call about the alledged problem.

I hope I have answered your questions.  If you have a City Directory all of the Council members and the Mayor's telephone numbers are listed as well as our Chief of Police's telephone number.

Thank you George. So just to clarify does that mean we are without police presence for approximately 48 hours a week? And we have to contact both LMPD and Woodlawn Park whenever something happens?

I have to admit - I am one that did not call the police on the mini bike kid. Having the police involved in that instance seemed a little extreme. But now that I know the proper protocol - I can follow it in more serious situations.

If a crime occurs where a Police Report needs to be taken call the Louisville Metro. Police Department to file a report. Examples of a  crime, are Vandalism, Burglary, Theft, Assault, Etc..  After you file a report to LMPD call our Police to notify them of the crime.  On many ocassions our officers are unaware of a crime being committed in our city until a resident advises them as such.

As I stated before are Officers are scheduled for approximately 120 hours for on duty activity per month.  This breaks down to about 30 hours per week. Hopefully, but don't count on it, we may ocassionaly see a Metro. car in our city. You must realize our Metro. Police are understaffed, and are spread very thinly in this area of town, but that is anothr story.

Our Council meetings are on the third Monday each month at our City Hall and the meetings start at 7:30pm.  We also have a Block Watch program in our city.
