BCA Board Meeting Minutes

In Attendance: BCA Board members Susan Lindsay, Jim Andrews, Lily Witham, Ann Bowling, Seann McKeel and Bethany Pratt. Katie Veening, Erin Kelley, Steve Hoyt (SEUL), Anne Hughes and Lee Perlman (Hollywood Star).

Meeting was chaired by Susan Lindsay.

BCA Meeting Place & Time changes- Susan Lindsay announced that Central Catholic High School is willing to let the BCA hold it’s General Meetings either in their gym or library, starting with the February meeting scheduled for Thursday, February 10th. Jim Andrews made the motion to change the General Meeting place to CCHS, and Ann Bowling seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous. The time will remain 7-9PM. Susan suggested that the Board meeting could be held at the Old Wives Tale SE 13th & E. Burnside, and will contact the owner to ask about it. Jim Andrews made the motion to change the board meeting venue to Old Wives Tale, with a second from Ann Bowling and a unanimous vote.

The group also discussed having the Board meetings start earlier as they are always on 1st Thursdays. Lily Witham made a motion to change the Board meeting time from 7-9 to 6:00-7:15. Ann Bowling seconded the motion with a unanimous vote. Susan suggested that in the interest of keeping the board meetings from duplicating the General meetings we will limit our board meeting time to setting an agenda for the General meeting, discussing committee work and board issues. Those people requesting time for presentations, discussion etc will be asked to do that at general meetings only. Board discussion was in favour of this change. Lily Witham will change the meeting information on the BCA website and Steve Hoyt will change information on both ONI and SEUL websites.

Burnside Bridgehead Update- Susan announced that the members of the selection committee who were to give their recommendations to the PDC regarding the Burnside/MLK development were told by PDC in an email that the “selection committee” has been changed to an “evaluation committee” and members are not expected to give recommendations at the January 12th meeting. The PDC has also asked to meet with the BCA, but as space and time is limited at the meetings, a separate meeting has been set up for Jan. 24th at 7PM. Seann McKeel offered the use of the main performance space at nocturnal (18th & E. Burnside) for the meeting. A tentative plan was set for a meeting on Jan. 24th, Susan will contact the PDC and see if they are available on the date. If so, Lily Witham will put the announcement on the BCA website and Steve Hoyt will add it to the SEUL website. Lily also offered to send the announcement to the press.

Neighbourhood Crime Stat Sheets- Lily Witham brought up the fact that the new format of neighbourhood crime stat sheets is incomprehensible due to the fact that there are very few actual numbers on the page and the graph charts make no sense without some supporting data. Lily suggested that the Board send a letter to Mayor Potter, Police Chief Foxworth and Commander Sizer, asking them to change the sheets back to the old format. Lily volunteered to write a draft letter for the BCA board members to approve.

BCA Newsletter- After some discussion, it was decided that the next issue of the Buckman Community News will be published by April 1st. Lily asked for article submissions from Susan Lindsay, Steve Hoyt and Jim Andrews. She also asked new neighbour Erin Kelley of flexcar to write a small article about flexcar. Submissions are due by March 20th.

Treasurer’s Report- Ann Bowling distributed BCA Profit & loss Sheets to the board members. It was decided that $35 is the cap on discretionary expenses, after that the board must approve expenditures.

St. Francis-Susan Lindsay will be meeting with Valerie Chapman of St. Francis and Commander Rosie Sizer, of the SE Precinct on January 20th.

Lone Fir News Conference- Susan Lindsay reports that there will be a news conference at Lone Fir Cemetery to cover the commencement of an architectural dig to ascertain if there are any remains left under the area around and under the County building. This will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 11th at 10AM, Lone Fir Cemetery. Commissioner Maria Rojo de Steffy will be there to speak with the press. Susan also suggested that the BCA give an award or certificate to Mary Ann Schwab to express our gratitude for all of her hard work on issues of importance to the BCA. Lily Witham offered to make the certificate.

Mural Update- Seann McKeel has a friend whom she is trying to get to re-do the BCA mural. His website is www.mudeyepuppet.com, and she suggested that the BCA check out his work online.

Neighbourhood Clean-Up Day- Ann Bowling is working again this year to put together the annual Earth Day neighbourhood clean-up. Susan Lindsay asked for volunteers, new neighbour Katie Veening offered to help Ann, and Lily Witham volunteered to solicit prizes for the raffle drawing.

BCA Fundraiser- After some discussion, the group decided to hold off on scheduling the annual BCA Fundraiser until the spring.
