Thinking Out Loud...Victory Gardens
Given the dire economic predictions, a resurgence in growing Victory Gardens sure seems possible. Home-grown produce helped our parents & grandparents survive the 1930's. Whole communities grew gardens and swapped fresh vegetables among neighbors.
What better place to restart this tradition of self-reliance than the fabulously fertilized and irrigated lawns of suburban America!
I can picture front lawns festooned with patches of corn stalks, flowing with squash and pumpkin vines, and glistening with fat tomatoes and peppers. I can even imagine the Sunday Swap, where neighbors stroll down dappled streets to share the bounty.
We may hope it never comes to this - but what a wonderful daydream it is, on this cold winter day, to imagine our little lawns as homestead gardens!
