On September 19, 2007, I had the opportunity of attending a Workshop by the KaBoom organization. It was sponsored by the Faye McBeath Foundation and Safe & Sound Inc.
Four Points Sheraton - Milwaukee Airport
KaBOOM! is a national nonprofit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.
Headquartered in Washington, D.C., KaBOOM! also has offices in Chicago, Atlanta and San Mateo, Calif.
The workshop presented a step-by-step approach of how to create a Playground - Play area in your neighborhood.
The facilitators shared specifics that included a Business Plan model, samples - budget, fundraising strategy, volunteer waiver, prep days and build day matrix, grant proposal, timelines, planning committee chart, questions to ask; and answered questions for clarity.
Additionally, there were two ladies present with hands-on testimony from Illinois that have recently created a KaBoom project - play space.
I found the process/play space project challenging, but durable. The information from the workshop was very useful and the facilitators engaging.
It is definitely a project that we will see included in our 5-Year Signature Plan Safety Initiative.
My schedule did not allow the Tour visit the next day scheduled for a Build Day - Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake County.
Go to, www.kaboom.org for information on how you can create a playspace in Milwaukee or where you live.
