Cabrillo Park Neigborhood Watch Program

How you can start participating

1. Give your time. Attend the monthly watch Meetings and volunteer your time whenever possible.

2. Order a Personal & safety Neighborhood Watch Handbook for $3.00 each plus tax shipping through our association.

3. Purchase and Completely fill out a Family Data, Telephone Tree, Family Data Summary & a Block Map sheet.

4.Bring a new Neighbor to each meeting if possible.

Attend Your First Meeting

1. Be sure to get a Name tag
2. Make sure you have all of the sheets listed above before you leave the first meeting.
3. We always introduce Our New Neighbor's.
4. Feel free to join in on the discussion with questions and comments. Don't be bashful.
5. Fill out the attendance sheet with your name & telephone #.
6. Make sure you always keep your Family Data sheets up to date
7. The sheets will only be distributed to Members, Only!!!!
8. Purchase your window decals or signs for your home.
9.If you do not have a Block Captain on your street, maybe you can volunteer as the Block Captain. The Block Captain will interface with the Law Enforcement & The Board.

To have a succesful Neighborhood Watch Group everyone in the neighborhood needs to be involved! Frequent Meetings gives neighbors a chance to become familiar with one another.

FOLLOW UP MEETINGS:
We have our Neighborhood Watch Meetings on the second Thursday of every month immediately following the Neighborhood Association Meeting for about one hour.

We will start doing a quarterly Pot Luck at our Meetings starting on our ONE Year Anniversary October 13, 2005, January , April,& July .

We will organize activities such as tool exchanges, Garage Sales, Community Gardens, and other community activities.

If everyone in our neighborhood gets involved we will improve the quality of life while protecting each other.

Neighborhood Watch Meeting Topics

Our reason for existence
"WE LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER!" is best achieved when we become better aquainted at regularly scheduled meetings. These meetings better educate you our neighbors about subjects that are should be of concern to the group. You also build great friendships.

There are many resources that are available to us as a Neighborhood watch Association from State,Federal, and the local levels. Our Crime PreventionOfficer Katherine Hallmark or Holly Magana gives has information on many topics, including:
Personal Safety, Self Defense, Child & Elderly safety, CPR & First Aid, Gangs, Drugs, Vandalism Protection, Fire prevention, Victim-Witness Services, Annoying Phone Calls, Observation Skills, Bicycle Safety, Fraud & Con Games, Larceny Prevention, Auto Safety, Latch Key Kids, ATM Precautions, Car-Jacking,Holiday Precautions, Home Security, Recognizing Substance Abuse,and Grafitti Protection.

If you are interested in a specific topic, you can also forma committee that focuses only on that issue. We will have a selected topic at each meeting as well.

Agenda:
If there is a issue or concern that you want to address with the whole group be sure to email or notify our president at least 24 hours prior so you can be added to the agenda and also let the president what the topic/concern is & how much time you will need.

Help us out and remind neigbors about our meeting at least two days before the meeting.

A TYPICAL MEETING:
Information Sharing
1. Sign in
2. If you are a new member fill out a membership form.
3. Pay the $10.00 Annual dues if you have not already paid.
4. Fill out Family Data Summary Sheets, Telephone Trees, & Block Maps.
5. Purchase if you have not purchased a Handbook or any other training literature available for purchase.

6.Discuss Strengths & weaknesses and Problems.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY:
7. Perform a suspect description exercise so each memeber will be able to know what is meant by
" She Simply Could Not Have Had Any Real Warning About Him"?

8. Define & discuss suspicious activity.
9. define when you call your law enforcement agency's business number.

It is very important to call, without hesitation , if you see, hear or smell anything suspicious.
10. Discuss any problems in the neighborhood.

HOME SECURITY:
1. Discuss security measures that can be taken.
2. See which one of your neighbors needs help with lock installation, tree trimming, installing outside lights, etc.
3. Placement of automatic timers , lights & radios.

PROPERTY ENGRAVING PROTECTION:
1. Mark & Inventory your property.
2. Videotape the interior of your home for insurance purposes. Put the video tape in a safe place.
3. Purchase an ingraver and share it with your neighbors.

TASK ASSIGNMENT:
1. Responsibilities will be delegated based on discussions.
2. Deadlines will be set for completion.
3. Donate to the Neighborhood Watch Association to purchase necesities.

WRAP-UP:
1. Next meeting date & time.
2. Who will handle refreshments?

LIST OF 22 IDEAS OF REGULAR ACTIVITIES, IN WHICH ALL NEIGHBORS HAVE FUN, SOCIALIZE AND ATTEMPT TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. LET'S FOLLOW THE MOTTO, "WE LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER!"

1. INFORMATION SHARING:
Write your own block newsletter, Keep your neighbors up to date on crime or other subjects of interests including what is going on in our watch group.

2. CARPOOLING:
share a ride to work , downtown, shopping,, etc., with a neighbor or two- especially the seniors on your block.

3. BLOCK HOME:
Involve at least one home as a safe haven for kids are frightened. Latch Key kids are a big problem. Lonliness of seniors is another problem. put them together to get a great solution to both problems.

3. GROUP MATERIAL BUYING:
Many nurseries, building supply, equipment rental, businesses, etc will give customers a discount on large orders. You can tie this into your block clean up day;buying fruit trees, shrubbery, or firewood, or renting home repair equipment. YOu might even extend this to groceries and canned goods if you have a costco, sam's or or other wholesale card.

4. BLOCK GARAGE SALE:
Buy an add in the local newspaper or Pennysaver and post signs advertising your big block-wide garage sale.
Conduct it on the same Saturdayto get the whole block involved.

5. BLOCK CLEAN-UP:
Rent a dumpster for a weekend. Neighbors can share tools and expertise to help one another.

6. BLOCK INVENTORY:
Share the wealth of TALENT & KNOWLEDGE onyour block- auto or bicycle mechanics, gardners, landscapers, day care providers, artists, lawyers,cement installer, electrician, plumber, locksmith,caterer, - all those secret talents can be bartered. Share your expertise,make friends and maybe even save some money.

7. DISASTER PREPARDNESS:
We are in a FLOOD ZONE. Develop a plan to cope with this emergency as well as a hurricane, fire or earthquake. Let's not take this for granted or to lightly. Look at the dammage Hurricane Katrina did,

Make sure you have your home prepared , food, and water supplies on hand and meeting places for your loved ones.

8. WINTER EMERGENCY PLANNING:
Develop a game plan for winter emergencies. Who has a gas stove? Four-wheel drive vehicle?
Does anyone have special needs? Who has a CB or ham radio? Identify & inventory your block resources.

9. Walking /Exercise Groups:
It is easier to walk with someone else at a regular time.

10. HOLIDAY DINNER GET-TOGETHER:
Pot-Luck or Catered and some entertainment.

11. PROGRESSIVE DINNERS:
Horsd'ouerves at a neighbors home, salad at the next, soup at the third, main course at the fourth and dinner at the fifth.

Each party provides one course, and the party moves from house to house.

12. CARD OR GAME GROUPS:
Get away from the TV and enjoy each other's company while playing Bingo, Cards, Monoply, Scrabble, etc. and talking about neighborhood watch issues and or concerns.

DISCUSSION GROUPS:
Once a month get together with neighbors, designate a rotating facilitator, and discuss any topic.

KIDS PARADE:
If your block has lots of kids, show them off with a childrens parade. (Close off your block by getting a city permit)area merchants are often willing to donate soft drinks, treats, and prizes for the event.

GOODS EXCHANGE:
Collect unwanted books, toys, or outgrown children's clothing. Exchange them with other neighbors for new "treasurers"

SUPPORT GROUPS:
Seniors, Young Mothers, and Single parents will benefit meeting to share concerns.

SIGN POSTING PARTY:
Celebrate community spirit by having a Party or BBQ for posting our Neighborhood Watch Signs up in our Neighborhood.

BOOSTER MEETING:
Arrange for a politician or a speaker to come to our meeting. A great source for a speaker is to have our local TV or radio station's speakers bureau.

BLOCK GARDEN:
A neighbor with unused garden space can let others use in exchange for produce, or our city may provide space for a garden plot in our neighborhood.


TELEPHONE REASSURANCE:
Establish a system whereby seniors or shut-ins are telephoned daily to make sure they are all right.
