VACATION SECURITY . . . by Arnie Kohl, Abatement Detective

Jul 28, 2003

As the vacation season approaches it is time once again to think about vacation security. Today I don't want to talk about the security of your home while you are away on vacation, but about the security of you and your valuables while you are away on vacation. Whether you are traveling by car or plane these are a few safety ideas:

?• Park in a well-lit area preferably near your room.
?• Use all available door and window locks in your room. Take a rubber doorstop along on the trip with you and use it to help secure the door from being pushed open.
?• Use the hotel safe to store your valuables.
?• Stay with or close to your valuables.
?• Always check the area before leaving to be sure you aren't leaving your cell phone or other valuables behind.
?• If you are driving, make sure your vehicle has been properly serviced and is in good condition for the trip.
?• Carry a cell phone with you and don't forget your battery charger and/or a car plug for the phone.
?• Keep your vehicle door and windows locked.
?• At stop lights and other traffic delays, leave enough space in front of your vehicle so you have an escape option if necessary.
?• Always let someone know the route you intend to take and your itinerary. Call them and let them know if you make significant changes to your plans.
?• Plan your trip carefully and make allowances for weather, fatigue, food, lodging, and fuel.
?• Make sure you have sufficient finances, but try not to carry too much cash with you. . . ☻
