BEYOND THE “COMFORT ZONE”

Jul 07, 2003

The old African proverb;
?“Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.?” has application to
community policing.

To become more skillful and efficient at crime prevention we need to stress our knowl?edge and abilities beyond the typical block watch activities.

We all fall into the habit of just doing what we are most comfortable with, and not
taking on the more difficult challenges. The old ?“comfort zone?”.

Often times we leave it to others to take on the more challenging and difficult tasks either because we claim not to have the time, knowledge or skills to do what needs to be done.

Take the jump! Try something new. It is said that it?’s better to have tried and failed than not tried at all.

Encourage others that are not involved to join you in new challenges. Not only will you gain new skills but you will surely do your community a great service.

You might also refrain from using the farewell expression, ?“smooth sailing?”. Try, ?“I hope you have a rough ride?”
