Castle Heights was carved out of the rancho Rincon de los Bueyes. This area has seen cattle ranching gave way to agricultural farming such as vineyards, orchards, hay and vegetables (e.g. lima beans). On the map you will see National Boulevard and an unpaved road that became Oakhurst Avenue. To the left is a farm house on what is now the corner of Flint and Cardiff Avenues. A little further down Oakhurst to the right stood the farmer's barn. Today, on either side of Oakhurst, you encounter a stand of ancient Sycamore trees that lined the seasonal wash. In order to develop the land for homes, storm drain pipes were laid in the bed of the wash all the way back to Irving Schacter Park. Cattaraugus Avenue was in place, but Castle Heights Avenue didn't yet extend very far into the neighborhood.
Note: The "Farm House" is located at 3126 Cardiff Avenue and is likely our oldest existing residential dwelling.
