How to Protect Your Computer & Files on Shared Network
How to Protect Your Computer & Files in a Shared Network (Central Lofts is a shared network)
Suggestions from computer experts to protect your files and your privacy while using a shared network (such as the wireless service paid for by the HOA), are listed below. If you are dealing with sensitive information (business tasks from home), it is strongly suggested that you obtain your own internet service and router.
- As a minimum, turn on the Windows or any other software firewall on every machine
- Better yet, purchase and enable a second router with your own personal IP address and password to connect to the Central Lofts router
- Update your Virus/Malware protection on your computer. Make sure your protection level is high and automatic scans are being performed (McAfee, Norton AntiVirus, etc).
- Turn off file sharing on your PC
- Do not perform online banking or other sensitive activities while using the shared network
