Initially I was against the City's purchase of Sunken Gardens, but as long as we get if for a fair price...(I consider less than 2 million fair)and Lowry Park Zoo maintains the facility, and the County assists with the purchase, I feel very strongly that it would be a plus for the community. As a unique tourist attraction ( you need to see what Lowry Park has done) and educational opportunity it would add to the ever enhancing image of St. Petersburg as a cultural center. I plan to push for support and approval of the City's purchase of Sunken Gardens

Could not have said it better
I too feel it would be an assett to our city, as long as the County and Lowrey aggree to play their part after the purchase is complete. As of this point every thing I have heard has been second hand, I would like to hear a representitive for Lowrey Park speak. RE: What they would consider to be the extent of their role in this venture.

Sunken Gardens
It is my opinion that Sunken Gardens should be saved at any cost. This is the last rain forest within the northern hemisphere. The historic designation, while appropriate, has caused the Turner family difficulty in selling the property. As a taxpayer and a citizen, I am willing to pay the one time levy that has been estimated at about $40 dollars to buy the property and ensure that it remains for our childrens great grandchildren as an example of how the citizens of St. Petersburg care about the environment and nature in general.

Historic Designation
Sunken Gardens has been for sale for about ten years. It was designated as a historic landmark about 14 month ago. Maybe the way the property has been maintained (or not maintained) or the selling price has more to do with the lack of buyers than the designation.
