Awesome Wal-Mart Town Hall!

Posted in: Circle C
For anyone who missed it, last night's town hall meeting at Bowie was a thing of beauty! Can you believe members of the CCHOA and SOS on the same stage (and they weren't trying to kill one another)???
It's nice to know that community opposition to the planned Wal-Mart is so overwhelming it can't help but unite even the most polar of opposites. The auditorium was packed full of a cross section of 500 people who refuse to be taken in by the Wal-Mart smoke screen.

Give Wal-Mart credit for one thing. At least they showed up! They failed to answer community concerns in any meaningful way, but at least they had the guts to sit there and take it. Endeavor, the so-called local developer of the tract, didn't even respond to the invitation!

The evidence against a project the size of the Super-Center is so overwhelming! If Wal-Mart pushes forward, it will be against the forces of basic logic - as well as a community united in STRONG opposition! I'm now convinced we can mount a credible PR campaign that will do serious damage to Wal-Mart's image and bottom line.

It won't be pretty, but it's the only way to deal with a company that seems to pride itself in being America's biggest corporate thug. Believe me, if we don't stop them here, it will get much worse. At last night's meeting, the Wal-Mart Rep. hinted the company would ultimately like to see a Super-Center located EVERY THREE MILES, throughout central Texas!!

Great Town Hall Meeting

Amen !

It was a great turn out and a clear message for Wal-Mart to go away.

I think they have more money than good sense. Arogant, definant, and indignate to the end. What losers!!

With 5 more Supercenter projects slated for Austin, they have more than enough work cut out for them. Of course, if they haven't planned better with the other sites, they are in for a long, hard, and expensive opposition in Austin.

What kind of pushovers did they think we were ? Did they think we want south Austin to start looking like Hwy 182 or Burnet Road ?

We have a responsibility to protect our environment, our water, and our real estate investments. Wal-Mart has many other opportunities and frankly, I could care less about how much money Endeavor loses on this bad project. What were THEY thinking ?

I can understand that Wal-Mart doens't have clue, but I really expected a lot more from Endeavor. They seemed like well meaning engineers. I guess the money must have been too much - why else would the ever offer almost a million dollars in concessions to push the crap through for Wal-Mart. Whey would they EVER do business with low lifes like that ?

Wal-Mart: Don't Mess with Texas !!
If Endeavor goes, then what?

What I have been hearing is that Endeavor is the real estate agent for the owner of the land. What happens if they fire Endeavor, then the owner can find someone else to represent the sale of this land. So we push out Endeavor but the Wal-Mart can still go through? Or another big box whore. Do I have this piece right?

I can understand the attitude of the Wal-Mart gal, imagine being in her shoes and listening to all of us! Hopefully they got the message but they really seem like they want to dominate the retail in Austin. I also heard that there will be a protest in front of the Wal-Mart .I have never been a shopper there but I wonder how many of us that live out here (the surrounding developments) actually shop there and spend lots of money. It's time to protest with our wallets!
I Agree

Yes, I agree it's a tremendous turn-around to see Circle C HOA on the same side as Darryl Slusher and the SOS group. Strange bedfellows, indeed! Having lived in Circle C for almost 10 years now, I believe the tide has turned for most residents. We've seen enough development and would like to see the community stabilize for a while -- give the traffic congestion, roads, and similar issues a chance to get resolved before giving any consideration to things like a Super WalMart. There's plenty of good shopping already available in Austin, anyway. So, what's the rush to build more? The tranquil beauty of the greenbelts along Slaughter Lane and the Escarpment entrance offer so much to residents.
