In addition to the prevention of washing machine leaks, please be aware of the current condition of your water heater. Heaters should be in good working order and should have a drip pan placed beneath them. Many past water damage claims could have been avoided if pans had been in position. This does not guarantee that no damage will occur, but is a simple, cheap solution to a large amount of water damages.
