Suzanne "Susie" Farmer

Susie Farmer was a role model for civic engagement.
From the time her feet dropped on the pavement in
Wimauma on August 1, 1989, so too did her wheels hit the road. Susie was a tireless activist for Wimauma. Among other Civic Involvements, she was a well known and respected member of the First Baptist Church, and served on the prestigious Hillsborough County Republican Executive Committee.

Susie campaigned relentlessly against substandard
housing and county code violations in the area for many years. She was involved in the CILWF and contributed greatly to League improvement efforts during her time in this neighborhood. She had her hand in nearly every organized campaign to clean up Wimauma and rallied the newspapers and television support along the way.

Among the greatest contributions to the community was the addition of the HCSO Wimauma Community Station. Originally located on S.R. 674 just at the east edge of town, it is currently located at the entrance to the groves apartment complex on 12th street.

Recently, one Community Resource Official reported... "If not for the teeth-sinking grit of Susie, this would never have been accomplished in this community." "Susie fought for Wimauma" reported another source; "She was a real go-getter." Susie did lose one important fight in her life, though, and that was a battle with lung cancer. She passed away in 2004 leaving a rich family legacy.

We are thankful for the role she played in this great neighborhood, but more grateful for the role she played in our everyday lives. We miss you Susie, and we ill continue to fight in your memory. Wanda Broughton

Clara Thompson
In December, Clara received official notice that she had been accepted to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Citizen's Academy.


Clara will participate in a twelve week program designed to promote better understanding between the Sheriff's Office and the citizens of Hillsborough County.

Topics of interest include:
Crime Stoppers
Use of force
Crimes against persons
Crimes against property
Explosive devices
Gang awareness
Community policing
Crime scene preservation
Traffic enforcement
D.U.I.
Homeland security
Basic Sheriff's Office operational procedures.

She will have the opportunity to tour the two county detention facilities, and to interact with specialty teams such as the SWAT Team, Dive Team, K9 unit, and others while spending the day at the Sheriff's Office Practical Training Site. Also, upon completion of the Academy, Clara will have the opportunity to participate in a Ride-A-Long with a uniformed patrol deputy.

Please join the League in congratulating Clara. She is devoted to making Wimauma a safe place to live and already works very closely with local Law Enforcement.

Let's do all we can to support Clara and encourage her as she uses the information she learns to better our community.

As a past officer and current member of the CILWF, she exemplifies one who is willing to work closely with county officials to identify and resolve unmet needs in the community.
