Re: Public Notice No. 200401649
My name is Sherry Elmore; I live at 7114 Denver Lane, Lou., Ky. 40258. This steel manufacturing facility will be 200ft. behind our back yard; and the proposed rail spur will be within 175ft.
The neighbors of Claremore Acres have been opposed to the Maverick Tube plant from the beginning. We received notice from the Planning Commission on November 10, 2004.
We attended all hearings with our objections stated on the record. The first hearing was on Nov. 24, 2004. We received a 2 week deferral. On Dec.7,2004, we met with Riverport
Authority and Maverick Tube to discuss our concerns, as recommended by the Planning Commission. On the Dec.9, 2004 Commission hearing we mailed several form letters from our neighborhood requesting another deferral, because we had found this company had a bad environmental past and would not be good for our neighborhood or the community. We were denied the request for another deferral, but the Commissions vote was not unanimous, so they scheduled a closed door vote on Dec. 16,2004, in which our community lost by one vote.
On a more personal note; there are many reasons I personally believe this Maverick Tube plant should not be allowed to locate here. First off it is too close to the residents properties. The toxic emissions risk is too great . The rail spur is less than 175 ft from our backyards and the plant itself is 200 ft. The woods behind our homes was wetlands, some of it has already been destroyed by this company; prior to their permit expiring. We have seen and heard woodpeckers, and many different types of wildlife. This was the last big dense area of woods near us for these little creatures. Myself and another neighbor filmed the trees being knocked down. There is so precious little wooded areas in this part of the county. Personally, I think there is such a thing as over-development and it is happening in our community; when the only place left to put a steel manufacturing plant is in a wetlands and 200ft from neighbors back yards.
This facility will operate 24hrs a day 7 days a week. There will be 50 trucks a day entering and leaving the plant and of course the rail spur making deliveries. Maverick Tube said it will only receive steel on the railcars, but when we questioned Riverport Authority further, they stated chemicals could come right behind our homes on this rail spur because they had no control over what CSX hauled. We do not want to become the next victims of a rail car accident like South Carolina, killed at least 8 people and caused 5,400 residents to be evacuated, imagine our chances of survival, being less than 200 ft from this rail spur {Courier Journal January 8, 2005.}
My family will have to move if this plant comes here. We will not chance a toxic spill or toxic emissions blowing into our home. It won’t give us much time to find a new place. This plant will strip the woods and run us out or our homes.
Thank you for giving the residents a voice, this steel manufacturing plant is a bad idea environmentally and ethically. It is a detriment to our community. Attached is some of the info pertaining to our fight against this plant.
Thank you,
Sherry Elmore, Tim Elmore, and Corey Elmore
