Is PRP turning into the next Rubbertown?

Was Southwest Jefferson County mislead?

The Riverport Development was originally presented to residences as a light industry, neighborhood friendly community of growth; but it has changed. It is now making deals with heavy industry companies. Maverick Steel wants to move into our neighborhood, Southwest Jefferson County. And this is just the beginning – is there more to come? A proposed steel mill is in the works for a spot on the river and the possibility of a scrap metal reprocessing center is in line for Stonestreet. What is going on here?

The land at the edge of Riverport, lining up to a neighborhood, is being cleared for Maverick Tube daily and they are only a few steps behind getting their construction permit. Written comments for the permit will be accepted by March 11th at 5pm:
Jesse Goldsmith

What will Maverick Tube bring to the area?
The construction of a rail spur, and 430,068 square foot plant.
In the beginning, they are planned for 7 rail cars a day, 7 days a week of rolled steel on the new rail spur. They will also receive 50 trucks a day moving up and down the Greenbelt Highway carrying hazardous materials. They will bring noise, pollution, and more traffic in an already busy area.

What are some of the chemicals will they use?
Nitric Acid – fatal if inhaled/ingested, contact with eyes & skin may cause severe burns
Evacuate 300 ft in all directions for small spill & 1300 ft for large spills
Glycol Ethers – blood toxicant, causes birth defects, attacks the respiratory/nervous system, liver & kidney
Evacuate 80 to 100 ft in all directions on small spills
Sulfuric Acid – reacts violently w/ water, causes severe burns, causes kidney & lung damage
Evacuate 200 ft in all directions on sm spills & 1000 ft for large spills
Zinc Sulfide – harmful if ingested; reacts w/ water, not acid and is air & moisture sensitive
Evacuate ½ mile in all directions
Hydrochloric Acid – toxic if ingested/inhaled and causes severe burns
Evacuate 100 ft in all directions on sm spills & 400 ft for large spills
Chromic – causes respiratory distress, damages liver/kidney, burns skin; corrosive with metals
Evacuate 330 ft down wind

What is their history?
The plants they currently operate out of have already been fined for air and water violations.

If Riverport is making deals with a company like this, what is next?
How can we keep the area safe for our families?
Call or write your area representatives, the developers, the planning & design services. Contact the Air Pollution Control District. Talk to the media and let them know your outrage that money is more important than the health of the community.

It is not too late... Although Maverick seems to be pushing it’s way through, we can do our best to contact local officials and let them know our outrage. Let them know we will not put up with this type of industry taking over Southwest Jefferson County. The citizens have had enough – we care about progress and jobs, but at what cost - certainly not our health. There are companies that are more suited for this area – would this be happening if we were on the other side of town? Then why should we put up with it here?
