Dear Mayor Bloomberg,
We need your help to save the lives of our children and ourselves.
Since the 2003 re-routing of access to the Lincoln Tunnel, our main retail neighborhood street -- Ninth Avenue from 35th to 57th Streets -- has become overwhelmed with daily gridlock, congestion, diesel fumes, buses, trucks, and enraged New Jersey commuters who use the street as a highway. In addition to a dramatic increase in pedestrian injuries at 11 intersections, on April 29 one of our neighbors died of an asthma attack, while the dispatched EMS vehicle was stuck in traffic. Children, seniors, tourists and residents are risking their lives every day crossing Ninth Avenue. Residents of our neighborhood feel we are under siege.
We are asking that the relevant agencies undertake a complete study of Lincoln Tunnel access routes -- in partnership with the community. The focus should be on pedestrian safety and traffic calming on Ninth Avenue to make this corridor the safe and flourishing "Main Street" that it ought to be.
Our many calls for help to the DOT, The Port Authority and the NYPD have failed to result in a comprehensive and specific plan to resolve our most serious neighborhood concern. As the human toll keeps mounting, we believe that you are the only one who can move the process forward into meaningful action.
Respectfully,
