The Process:
1. Call B&N to set up your appointment (only if you were notified by mail).
2. Do not use your water for a minimum of 6hrs. before testing.
3. Note number of hours water has been idle (B&N representative will ask).
4. Provide B&N access to your basement and kitchen.
The Details:
Appointments can be made for Saturday mornings only between the hours of 5:40 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Call B&N at 459-2050 ext 538 to schedule an appointment. A B&N representative will arrive (do not allow any person entry if you have not contacted B&N to schedule an appointment. B&N will only visit households that have called to request an appointment.) and will require access to your basement to check the plumbing at your water meter. They will then will proceed to the kitchen to take a water sample from the tap. The entire appointment should take less than 15 minutes
It is important to understand that this test is for the concentration of lead in the water service line that sits between the water main (at the street) and your house. In order for the test samples to accurately reflect lead levels, this water must remain undisturbed for a minimum of 6 hours. The total length of time the water has remained undisturbed is a required parameter of testing so be ready to tell the sampling representative what time the water was last used.
This process provides homeowners with free lead concentration testing of their water. Lab results from the City Water Quality Assurance Lab are available from B&N upon request and are confidential. Call the number listed above for more information.
It is important to note that there is no mandatory policy in place requiring the city or homeowners to replace lead lines should the lab results reveal unnapproved levels of lead in the water. However, should a mandate become a reality, the city would be required to offer homeowners line replacement when replacing city lines. This would be done at the homeowners expense, but could result in a lower cost than having a third party do the work. In many cases, excavation is not required to retrofit the line.
