Ready-made community may be one reason why immigrants figure prominently in many evangelical congregations. Those with established religious ties in their countries of origin tend to build their own churches. According to Boston's Emmanuel Gospel Center, recent counts, for instance, showed some 400 evangelical Brazilian churches in Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, along with 15 Cambodian ones. Immigrants have also been drawn into existing churches: St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, has reached out to the thousands of Liberians who live in the Ocean State, for example, and Faith has a sizable first-generation Latino population.

Dear Mary and PNA readers,

What makes the success of St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church, 690 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket,  more phenomenal seems to be the motivation of 150 church members who feed 3,000 Pawtucket city residents each month from the church food pantry.  The pantry empowers the  church's 75 Western African immigrants from Liberia to support and to serve in the Pawtucket community.

Breaking down the numbers, what the statistics show is the power of one of the city's most ethnically diverse churches serving food to about four percent of Pawtucket's population.

If interested, please come as my invited guest.  Free coffee and pastry as well as door prizes will be served and given to all visitors.  In addition, this would give visitors a chance to witness how our food pantry operates.

Peace,  Jim Matuszek

May take you up on the offer for coffee...but super job the church is doing- Thanks
