News From The Gateway
As the night temperatures start to get cooler, our garden crops are either dying or going into full production. I am growing ?“Birdhouse Gourds?” and they are amazing in both their size and quantity, while the green beans are done for the season. Gardeners will be cleaning out their garden beds, the compost pile will grow much larger and need turning, and general clean up of the site will take place through October. Weed control on the gravel paths and picnic site, and reconditioning of the wtaer tower will also take place this fall. I have been part of the Gateway Site since its inception several years ago and have watched it grow from a field of weeds into a very pleasant and usable space for Columbia Park neighbors. This will be my last season overseeing developements at the Gateway. Ryan Curry, the Community Organizer for Colunbia Park will become the contact person for this site. If any neighbors are interested in helping further develop this site we would welcome you to join the Open Spaces Task Force. Please call Ryan at 612.578.8922 for further information. Garden plots will be available for rental starting in March of 2003. Watch for notices in the Columbia Park Neighborhood News. It has been a pleasure to serve Columbia Park in my former capacity on the Open Spaces Task Force. We have such a lovely neighborhood. Thank you to Alex Boyer and Pat Bolin, who continue as members of the Open Spaces Task Force, for all their continuing hours of involvement. Finally, the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority represented by John Tripp, Mike Snow and Geno and their Sentence to Serve crew supervised by James are to be commended for their unfailing efforts on behalf of the Gateway site and our Neighborhood. -Sue Bembenek
