Sometimes these people are sent out in advance to canvass a neighborhood to see if anyone is home. If no one answers, they let others know that it's OK to break in. Your best bet is a good security system, for peace of mind.
I just tell people I'm not interested in what they have to say or sell. You don't have to be rude ,just make your point and say goodbye. Though I never turn down a kid from the neighborhood that is selling something.

They are merely POSING as salespeople to see if you and your abode are ripe for invasion.
