Re: Mindless growth versus Smart growth ?– Your editorial of 9/20/01

Dear Sir or Madam:

I?’m reacting to the editorial in which my name was mentioned in connection with the continuing growth in Jefferson County. You raised the question: ?“But what did he expect when he moved there ?– that none of his neighbors would want a nearby drugstore or bank??”

When I moved here in 1987 I expected a continuation of residential development. I was hoping that some of the rural scenery could be maintained. I also expected to drive to the grocery store, bank and dry cleaners. I did not expect the store to come to me! I have yet to meet a neighbor that wants another store next to us.

The editorial fails to mention that we already have a bank and dry cleaner across from Copperfield. There?’s no word about ?“Landis Lake Village?”, a development with 100,000 square feet of commercial/retail space that was approved last July right across from where ?“The Villages of English Station?” was proposed.

?“Landis Lake Village?” will serve as the Neighborhood Activity Center for our area following the guidelines of Cornerstone 2020.

We are fighting for ?“smart growth?”. We are not against further development but ask that what little land is left be used in a responsible way staying within the guidelines of Cornerstone 2020. One only needs to look at the ?“blight of Middletown?” to see that we don?’t need more commercial space in our area. For example the ?“Biggs Complex?” is largely empty and not all the out lots have sold. I hope that the officials charged with the responsibility for planning use common sense and stay within Cornerstone 2020 guidelines.
