I think for years people in the neighborhood graciously volunteered many hours to maintain the neighborhood free of charge and our fees were around $50 a year. They interviewed and hired snow removers, followed up on maintainance rules as they changed governmentally and made sure common areas were taken care of. A surprising number of residence were not appreciative of these volunteers. People in our community did not pay their dues putting their neighborhood maintainance volunteers in difficult positions. Some neighbors would call these volunteers and curse them out, threaten them and insult them. Very few individuals will volunteer for long when they are poorly treated. Members of our community would volunteer at meetings to do all kinds of things to help out and never follow through. Eventually no one wanted to continue with the volunteering and preferred to pay high costs to have someone else do the job. Unfortunately the company hired is doing a poor job; a very poor job, but unless new residence wish to volunteer to take the reign this does not seem likely to change. I am sure the current neighborhood volunteers checked out several organizations prior to hiring this one, and I hope they are looking into alternatives. The best alternative would be for everyone living in our community to be responsible, attend meetings, pay dues as if it is a priority and manage ourselves, but three or four responsible leaders will not lead for long for "free" if not respected. And as we can see, paying a business large fees is not better.
