Why CVELG Is Wrong - Reason #3
CVELG asserts that Broomfield was unethical in the process leading to the city/county ballot question because Broomfield elected officials were involved. As has been noted before, elected officials do not lose their rights as citizens and there is nothing unethical about them being involved in what they believe. It should also be noted that the group that led the drive for the city/county amendment was a Broomfield citizens group called Citizens for Better Local Government. Only a few members of this group were elected officials. It is wrong for CVELG to say that it is unethical for elected officials to have been involved in the city/county effort.

We all know - your idea of who
BF citizens are - and your idea of many meetings.
Sounds like the same citizens that were involved with the county creation.
(oh, yes - and their many meetings too!)

WW where is the balance?
Yes, I would like to give my two cents!
You bet, we need good companies for good jobs. Lets face it, none of us would be living as well as we do now if we all worked for the local taco house. However, bringing in these companies is a two way street.
The ability for government to bring in good jobs is highly competitive. They need to look at socioeconomics, infrastruture and the like. These companies need labor to run their businesses and that is why they are interested in the amount of roof tops government can bring in. However, they also need people that are educated. As we have been reading over the last year, there appears to be an incredible shortage of both factors.
Then we must also look at the population growth nationally as well. How will our generation deal with so many people? Growth is impacting almost every state in the union, the western states have incredible growth numbers.
I think Colorado has taken more than its fair share of that growth. And as some of us old timers here would tell you, our state is not handling the situation very well. Our state government is completely irresponsible about local laws and regulations which may curtail the land grabbing you see now. And the longer our state does this, the more it will cost us in quality of life, pollution and crime. I believe there should be a moritorium on any more growth until they get this under control.
Cities will proclaim that stopping growth will curtail the economic base we need to survive. To counter that remark, let me use the City of Arvada as an example of why I think that statement is crap. First, take a look at Arvada, what to you think about it? There is hodgepodge development everywhere, a lot of shabby businesses, houses and very little open space. Now Arvada wants to expand and build more to boost their economy. My only comment to Arvada would be: if you cannot control or fix what you have now, why should you be given any more to screw up!
Besides, people are intelligent enough to know that the key to life is not just having a good job,it is also the quality of life in general. Our quality of life is then balanced by how well our cities can handle our needs. Like recreation, open space, schools, etc... This is why it is so important to have quality people that understand these needs and constraints to work for you. I.e. good politicians and they are out there!

Why CVELG Is Wrong - Reason #4
CVELG notes that the majority of the financial contributions to Citizens for Better Local Government came from businesses and asserts that there must be something sinister about this. Businesses are a part of our democracy and have a right to contribute to candidates and to issue campaigns. Businesses should also be interested in the ability of local government to be prepared for the next millenium because the ability of local government to provide necessary services will be challenged - services such as police, water, parks, open space, recreation, natural disaster responses, human services, health services, etc.
Several derogatory remarks were made by CVELG's members about Interlocken that are really unwarranted. Intelocken is the catalyst for bringing in many good, high paying jobs. It should be noted that of all the cities in the area, Westminster has more residents working at Sun Microsystems in Interlocken than any other city, including Broomfield. It is wrong for CVELG to cast aspersions about Interlocken and the contributions Interlocken and other businesses made to the Broomfield city/county campaign.
