What is Crawfordsville Fighter's Guild Training Association?

This is a training group that gets together and trains in the four main ranges of fighting (kicking, punching, trapping, and grappling) for fun and to stay in shape.

So, is this a martial arts school then?

No, this would technically be considered a Training Group. It is nothing like a traditional martial arts school. It is informal, and we emphasis training more than learning techniques. We are about trying to build attributes, not just learning self defense. Our goals are to be actually able to pull it off in a real live street fight.

What stuff do you train?

We essentially study Jeet Kune Do which lends itself to the exploration of many different arts. A short list would be: Savate, Muay Thai, Shoot Wrestling, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Kali, boxing, different types of kung fu, fencing, and really the list goes on.

We don't try to master all of these arts, but rather take what is conducive for the street fight, and find the right art for the moment. That is why we study and train mostly under the guidance of PFS instructors. For more info on PFS, click here.

Who's in charge?

I (Johnny), lead the group. I am not a certified instructor. Since the nearest JKD or GJJ school is an hour away, I started this so I didn't have to travel so far all of the time. I still travel around and make seminars to advance my training. Also, if you are knowledgeable we don't mine learning from you either. I just guide the group, and am really just a first among equals. I am learning along with everyone else. But on the other hand, I feel what we are doing is top notch and second to none here in Crawfordsville.

How much does it cost?

The class is free. You may have to pay a few dollars to the community center unless you are a member. I would like to bring in certified instructors every few months, so maybe everybody could pitch in $5 or $10 dollars a month? We shall see.

Is this safe?

Yes, I watch what everyone is doing very closely, but you should expect some things. You will be sore, and you will get bruised from time to time. We are different from a traditional school in that we don't practice techniques in the air, but rather you are always working with a person. If you kick, you kick a bag being held by another. If we work the straight blast, the man getting blasted wears a helmet.

Also, the training is incremental. For example, in boxing you would start off learning the punches, then focus mitts, then Panantuken drills (which isolates one technique, but at full speed), to advanced focus mitts, to finally sparing. Then even the sparring can be done on different levels.

The main thing you should know though, is that we are more about training, and not about showing off or hurting people. Hot heads need not apply! We don't want you if you have a bad attitude. And all people must sign a waiver.

What do I need to bring?

Wear clothes that can get ripped, a mouth piece would be nice. If you like the class, later on you can buy some kali sticks, boxing gloves, and a gi. Nothing is required though.
