Criminal concerns in District 3:
• Armed robberies of women with diamond rings
• Theft from motor vehicles (TFMV)
• Residential Burglaries
• Auto Theft

Armed robberies of women with diamond rings:
There have been 12 robberies. The two men have apparently followed women home, primarily from Cherry Creek. When they arrive home, the women are approached, assaulted, and the men demand their rings. They are armed! The police have video surveillance tape of the vehicle which is described as a Red Honda without plates, the men are described as Hispanic in their 30s. All happened in the afternoon, 2 of the women had been at Whole Foods, 2 at Safeway and 1 at Pottery Barn.

Other notes:
▪ In June there was a case of a woman going door-to-door in Wash Park neighborhood saying she needed $40 for a nebulizer for her child. She managed to get someone’s VISA card and pin. No arrest.
▪ The police say that most door-to-door “magazine” sales people are involved in scams or casing. If you see people “selling” magazines, report their vehicle and plate number to police. (One officer reported that when people selling things come to his door his son tells them that his Dad is a police officer and he’s “downstairs cleaning his guns”.)
▪ The police have been setting up bait garages in the hopes of catching those stealing from open garages. No luck to date.
▪ Theft from motor vehicles (TFMV) continues to be an issue in our neighborhood and even more commonly in Cherry Creek. The police remind us to remove CDs, CD players, etc. prior to arriving at your destination. It’s better to hide these in your trunk before you arrive at your parking space. Of course, lock your car. TFMV in Cherry Creek are most frequent on Wednesdays. Also, afternoons and evenings are more common times.
▪ Auto thieves have been keeping garage door openers. If possible, the police recommend that you switch to putting your opener on your keychain.
▪ Record serial numbers and take photos of jewelry, electronics, etc.
▪ Lock your doors and windows
▪ Pay attention to your surroundings and call police with concerns
▪ Keep your garage door closed, even when you’re at home.
▪ Keep your porch and patio lights on all night

DPD again spoke about working with City Council on a new auto theft ordinance; this will create a city ordinance to make it illegal to be in a stolen car. There are two goals:
1. to be able to charge everyone (who know it is stolen) in the car
2. to increase the number auto thefts that are prosecuted. My understanding is that the city attorneys would prosecute a higher percentage of auto thefts than the district attorneys.

There were 3323 auto thefts and 398 arrests for auto theft in the first 5 months of this year.

Distributed paperwork (you can probably pick these up at the station house):
1. District Three Contact/Phone Number Sheet, revised 5/05
2. Let’s Beat Property Crime information Sheet
3. DPD Crime Prevention Information Packet
4. DPD 2005 Newsletter
5. 3 Crime Alert! Sheets: Suspect committing sexual assaults in metro area, suspect in armed robbery at Florida and Holly, suspects in armed robberies of women with diamond rings.

If you know of incidents not noted here, if you have information that you think it would be useful to add, or if you know that I made an error in this, please let me know. You can write to me directly at pslbreese@comcast.net.
