  • Respect-O-Meter: Respected Neighbor

A citizen called me this a.m. who lives in the Ola & North Boulevard area.  Apparently, a white male, driving a silver colored vehicle, pulled into her driveway and rang her doorbell about 1:30 p.m. yesterday.  When she came to the door, he asked for gas money, so he could get his pregnant wife to the hospital.    Unfortunately, this occurs all over the city, and it is most likely a scam.  Out of fear, this citizen reluctantly gave the money.  (She did not call the Police when it happened) She is a senior citizen and lives alone, and could have easily been overcome.   This "person in need" may have also been checking to see if someone was home, in order to attempt a home burglary.   As a rule of thumb, if someone knocks on your door, and you do not recognize them, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR.  Verify the purpose of their visit.  Don't pretend your are not home.  If the person is claiming to have some sort of emergency...shout through the door that you are calling the Police.
