Thank you for taking the time to get involved. You know those groups of bicyclists that you see riding around as if casing the neighborhood? They are called "Suspicious Persons", and when they are over in our neighborhood doing this type of activity the residents need to call the TPD Non-Emergency number (231-6130) and report them as such. Give a description (how many, color/type of clothing, whether they are white/black/Hispanic/Asian/Martian/etc, direction they are going, how long they've been doing this, etc). Keep a log of what you see & the time you called it in. Ask the TPD dispatcher for -- and keep it in your log -- the incident number, which is assigned to every incident reported, in order that you or somebody else may follow up on the report; that way the report will be investigated, because they know you'll be following up. If you get a bad attitude from the dispatcher (you shouldn't, but they are human, too, and have bad days. You wouldn't believe the calls they have to filter through) simply identify yourself as a member of Neighborhood Watch in Grid 10 & tell them you were told that this is the procedure to follow. Don't worry about reporting something that turns out to be innocent; TPD actually wants you to call in and let them decide whether the incident is innocent or not, because that's their job. They'd rather answer false alarms than have you become a victim. Besides, the more you call & TPD comes out to investigate, the "Suspicious Persons" will start to notice, "Hmm, every time we rides around here the cops show up. Somebody watchin!" When they catch on to that, we can all begin to breathe easier. Working together, we can fix this. |
