Crittenden Atwood Neighborhood Watch - Happy Holidays!

The Twelve Safety Tips of Christmas

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

It’s important to remember to be safe and be aware of our neighborhood all year round. During this season of giving and togetherness, unfortunately, criminals don’t take a break from their activities. Read over these safety tips and let’s work together to keep Crittenden Drive and Atwood safe and happy this holiday season!

1.      We all want our homes to reflect the joy of the season, but avoid displaying gifts where they can be seen from a window or doorway.

2.      Arrange to have packages delivered to a neighbor or to your workplace if you're not home to receive them.

3.      Packages left on porches or doorsteps are "easy picking" for thieves. It also draws unwanted attention to your home.

4.      Consider simple outside decorations. Elaborate or large lawn pieces are often stolen right out of the lawn.

5.      Be sure not to obscure the view from your windows. You need a clear view of your property.

6.      Always lock your home's doors and windows, even if you're only gone for a few minutes.

7.      Compact or dispose of gift packaging discreetly. For example, don’t throw your flat screen TV box away in the alley in plain sight. Often criminals will spot something you've discarded and can target you for their next burglary or theft.

8.      When leaving town, have a trusted friend or neighbor take care of your home. Never cancel general deliveries such as mail, newspapers, and other services when leaving town or going on vacation.

9.      Notify your local police precinct when you're planning an extended absence (contact information below). They can issue a vacation watch or directed patrol for your home.

10.  Always lock your car and close the windows, even if you're only gone a few moments. When possible, lock all merchandise or packages in the trunk of your car. Load your packages before departing the store, not at home after you’ve parked on the street.

11.  Shop with at least one partner. Have your car or house key in your hand as you approach the car. If attacked use those keys as weapons!

12.  Stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you. Look inside your car and around it as you approach.
