Entrance Sign Installed
Cudjoe Gardens has a beautiful, new entrance sign. It was created and donated by Fred Eder and Chuck Stitzel. For years the Association had budgeted money for a sign, but nothing was done until last year.
Protected from vehicular traffic by the flashing lights of Sgt. Jim Wirth?’s patrol car, a chain gang installed the new entrance sign for the Gardens at the corner of 1st Ave. W. and Drost Dr. The gang included Jim Lloyd, Dave Musselman, Bob Tauber and a guest from Key West, Mike West (no relation). Jerry Krause arranged for digging the post holes, including those for the new location of the bulletin board.
BJ and Bob Deis assumed responsibility for planting and maintaining at the entrance sign. They are also carrying out the planting near the newly positioned and renovated CGPOA bulletin board.
Thanks to all who contributed to these projects.
Aqueduct Project Winds Down
The first phase of the construction project by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority in Cudjoe Key is nearing completion. Paving from 7th Ave. and south is all that remains. Only lanes torn up by trenchers are being repaved.
The project, which started in February, is expected to be completed in September. It consisted of replacing the water mains along Drost Drive that were not already replaced during the culvert project. The service lines leading from the mains to water meters in individual homes were also replaced. The excavations were filled in and are now being repaved. The total cost for the project, including some areas east and north of the Gardens, came in under budget at about $500,000.
The second phase, replacing service lines west of Drost
Drive, is budgeted for the year 2002. However, the budget has not been finally approved, according to Joe Ivey, contract manager at FKAA. Further questions may be directed to Ivey at (305) 296-2454, ext. 215 or Arlan Higgly at ext. 7605.
Trees along Drost Drive
Jim Lloyd reports that the original plan for landscaping along Drost Drive has been completed. However, enough additional donations have been received in the last two weeks to plant an additional 8 to 10 trees.
In another 30 days the project should be all wrapped up.
County Improvements
Clark Briggs, of the Monroe County Engineering Department, reports that concrete ?“mushrooms?” will be placed at the edges of certain intersections to discourage vehicles?’ cutting corners and thus reduce erosion. Trees will be planted where the culverts were installed and sodding will be completed.
The bike path between Drost and Colson Drives will also be painted.
